This is a spectacular poster from 1956 which promotes the UK film "1984" (the very first cinema rendition of the story). Written by George Orwell (original novel) and William Templeton/Ralph Bettinson (screenplay), and directed by Michael Anderson. In a totalitarian future society, Winston Smith (Edmond O'Brien), whose daily work is re-writing history, tries to rebel by falling in love. Some would say a film ahead of it's time, and perhaps more relevant now than ever. What makes this poster even more unique is the censor stamp at the upper center: "Approved" by the Censure Bureau of Quebec. Oh the irony!! We've never seen another one like this...

Want another fun fact? Like the earlier film adaption of Animal Farm, this film was secretly funded by the CIA to serve as a message to "all countries threatened by communism".

Condition: Very Good. Conservation mounted on linen, original folds have been restored.

Year: c.1956 - 68 years old

Size: 27.0" x 41.0" (69cm x 104cm)
