Asteria Sea Star

How spectacular! Here we have a 233-year old copper-plate engraving of an Asterias Sea Star. However...did we mention it's been expertly and authentically hand colored?! The art of hand-coloring began in the late 17th century and remains just as remarkable in modern day. One of the incredible positives of hand-colored engravings is that no two pieces are the same! Making each plate engraving a one-of-a-kind piece of history.

Designed by Italian-born engraver Pietro Scattaglia, this exotic starfish was intended to be a part of the 1780 edition of "Tableau Encyclopedique et Methodique des Trois Regnes de la Nature" or "Methodical Encyclopedic Table of the Three Kingdoms of Nature", a publication that ran from 1782-1832, and was published by French publisher Charles Joseph Panckoucke.

The perfect addition for the marine biologist, sea lover or thalassophile in your life!
