The 1830s saw the rise of mass circulation magazines in America. Promoting greater consumption, these publications became popular as means to share everything from literature, philosophy, to sports and the current state of international affairs. Not to mention, they were a newfound opportunity for advertisers to capitalize on a novelty medium-- resulting in a new and attractive stream of revenue that would only encourage many others to soon develop publications of their own.
"Every Week magazine" debuted in 1915 and ran until 1918, it was a rich resource for those interested in the home front of WW1. It included everything from popular fiction, to philosophy and fashion and was specifically designed to target women who's men were fighting on the front lines.
This issue from January 13, 1916 features the short story titled "The Girl Behind Him" by author George Weston. What gorgeous cover artwork by illustrator Gene Pressler!
