Cardinal Mercier (1917)


This poster is part of a series printed in 1917 (shortly after the US entered WWI) which promoted food rationing for the war effort to many different immigrant groups living in the US. Featuring a Portrait of Cardinal Mercier of Belgium, the poster urges citizens to "eat less wheat, meat, fats and sugar" to benefit the people of France, Belgium and Italy. The artist was George John Illion, a famous illustrator who made several WWI posters. 

Size: 20.5 x 27.75

Condition: Very Good. Conservation mounted on linen. Light creases and an upper tear have been beautifully restored.
