"Le Rire" or "Laughter" was the name of a successful satirical French publication that ran from October 1894 to April 1971. Founded during the Belle Epoque by French creative director Felix Juven, "Le Rire" found success in a time where people in French society were enjoying higher educations, better income, and most importantly- leisure time. As interest in the arts, culture and politics intensified during the turn of the century, "Le Rire" was the perfect concoction to satisfy such curiosities for the historical price of just 15 cents! Wow.

What marvelous graphics on this 1901 masterpiece! Designed by French illustrator Guillaurme for Le Rire, this satirical comic is nothing short of striking.

The comic is titled "Some Else's Lover" as this elite Madame and Monsieur dressed to the nines as they swoon over a sweet drink and smoke. "Ugh I don't know why he stays with her" says the beautifully manicured Madame. "Whew! All he can do is pretend to please... or he'll never know peace" says the pensive Monsieur. If we can agree on anything, it is that this is most certainly a stunning illustration. Signed in plate in the lower right hand corner.
