This promotional booklet from the mid-1930s showcases the storytelling power of Depression-era advertising at its finest. Featuring a dramatic cover illustration by Harold Von Schmidt, one of America's premier Western illustrators, the piece depicts a solitary prospector on horseback beneath a starlit Death Valley sky. The atmospheric painting captures the rugged romance that made the Death Valley Days radio program a beloved fixture in American homes.
Published by the Pacific Coast Borax Company to promote their iconic 20 Mule Team brand, this booklet extended the world of 'The Old Ranger' from airwaves to printed page. The interior spreads combine striking photography of Death Valley landmarks with illustrated tales of frontier life, including the story 'Purple and Fine Linen.' The yellow-tinted layouts featuring mule team caravans and dramatic canyon views transport readers to a landscape both harsh and beautiful.
A compelling artifact of radio's golden age, this piece demonstrates how corporate America wove entertainment, nostalgia, and brand identity into memorable cultural experiences. A standout piece for collectors of Western illustration, vintage advertising, or broadcasting history.
