This original 1920 stone lithograph was designed by the Belgian artist Jean Léon Gouweloos, a respected illustrator known for elegant lines, soft palettes, and a signature blend of theatrical charm. Gouweloos often worked with performers, dancers, and cabaret imagery, and he brings that same playful spirit into this advertising design. Posters from this period remain collectible because they represent a moment when commercial art embraced both craft and imagination.
In this graphic the cheeky madame is dressed in a Pierrot inspired costume, gracefully balanced across a large mechanical wheel that showcases the Haubourdin shock absorber, the product being promoted! The exaggerated wheel, the polished metal, and the bright red mechanism all highlight the precision engineering behind Haubourdin’s suspension system. At the same time, the floating figure and sweeping lines soften the composition, keeping it light and inviting.
This poster captures the charm of early twentieth century Belgian advertising, when character filled scenes were the secret to making new technology feel exciting. It is also a rare treat from Gouweloos, who brought his theatrical flair to the fast emerging world of motor innovation.
