In the eighteenth century, Pope Benedict XIV consecrated the monument to the memory of Christian martyrs and established Stations of the Cross within its interior. The vegetation spilling through the ancient arches was equally famous. In 1855, botanist Richard Deakin documented 420 plant species growing within the Colosseum, preserving a record of the lush, picturesque ruin that fascinated nineteenth century visitors.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThrough delicate engraved lines, Moschetti translates Marchi’s drawing into a richly detailed view of a monument in transition. Later excavations would uncover the underground hypogeum and change the appearance of the interior dramatically.
