This 100-year-old poster advertises the Eden Concert Variété, an entertainment venue on Wagenstraat in Amsterdam operating under the direction of W.H. Siehl. During the 1920s, venues such as the Eden formed an integral part of Amsterdam's nightlife, presenting evenings of live music, comedy, dance, acrobatic performances, and theatrical revues inspired by the celebrated café-concerts of Paris and the German Varieté tradition. These theaters appealed to both middle-class and working-class audiences, reflecting the growing popularity of modern urban entertainment during the interwar years.
The design reflects the transition from the flowing decorative forms of late Art Nouveau to the increasingly geometric language of Art Deco that came to define European commercial graphics during the 1920s. The composition centers on the illuminated theater, rendered in vibrant green and crowned with ornate architectural detailing, while elegantly dressed figures frame the building as if inviting passersby into an evening's performance. The gentleman's formal tailcoat and white gloves, paired with the woman's cloche hat, bobbed hairstyle, and dropped-waist dress, firmly place the image within the fashions and social culture of the Jazz Age.
At a time when live performance remained the dominant form of evening entertainment, establishments like the Eden introduced audiences to an ever-changing program of singers, comedians, dancers, illusionists, and international touring acts. Their brilliantly illuminated façades became symbols of excitement and modern city life, a sense of spectacle echoed here through the glowing theater windows set against the deep blue evening sky.
Particularly noteworthy is the treatment of the title "EDEN," whose monumental geometric letterforms reflect the growing influence of Art Deco on Dutch commercial design. Combined with its vivid palette, theatrical composition, and fashionable figures, the poster captures the optimism and sophistication of Amsterdam's entertainment culture during the interwar period. Today it stands as both an exceptional example of Dutch advertising art and a vivid historical document of one of the city's once-thriving variety theaters.

Partial diaganol creasing under left outer cross fold. Scattered background scuffs. General wear and blemishing in border. Quite simply, if you are not satisfied with your purchase for any reason, simply contact us within 14 days of receipt and we'll gladly accept your return, providing the item is in the same condition as it was sent.
Returns
Our policy lasts 14 days. If 14 days have gone by since your purchase, unfortunately, we can’t offer you a refund or exchange.
To be eligible for a return, your item must be in the same condition that you received it. It must also be sent in the original packaging.
There are certain situations where only partial refunds are granted (if applicable). Any item not in its original condition, is damaged or missing parts for reasons not due to our error. Any item that is returned more than 14 days after delivery may also be ineligible.
Once your return is received and inspected, we will send you an email to notify you that we have received your returned item. Your refund will be processed, and a credit will automatically be applied to your credit card or original method of payment, within two business days. Original shipping costs are not refundable.
