This uncut proof sheet represents a significant collaborative work by the five principal artists of the San Francisco psychedelic poster movement: Rick Griffin, Stanley Mouse, Victor Moscoso, Wes Wilson, and Alton Kelley. Produced for a benefit concert supporting Artists Rights Today (A.R.T.), an advocacy organization established by the artists to regain copyrights many had signed away during the 1960s, the piece serves as both an artistic statement and a historical document. Among the rights the organization sought to recover were those to the celebrated Avalon Ballroom and Family Dog concert posters. Although A.R.T. existed only briefly from 1986 to 1989, it produced a series of four benefit posters that stand as rare examples of direct collaboration between the movement's leading designers.
The artwork was circulated among all five participating artists, making the finished composition a true collaborative effort rather than the work of a single designer. Each of the four A.R.T. posters was issued in two formats: a numbered edition of 350 silkscreen prints signed by all five artists, and an unsigned lithographic edition. This example is an exceptionally scarce uncut proof sheet, retaining its original registration marks and offering valuable insight into the printing process.
The design synthesizes the flowing formal language of Art Nouveau with the bold chromatic experimentation that defined San Francisco psychedelic poster design. A central female figure, rendered in graceful organic linework reminiscent of Alphonse Mucha and the Vienna Secession, holds a paintbrush as a symbolic celebration of artistic authorship. The complementary magenta and green palette, energized with orange accents, reflects the optical color relationships these artists pioneered to maximize visual impact under concert lighting. As both a production artifact and a collaborative work, this proof sheet captures a pivotal moment when the founders of the psychedelic poster movement united to preserve the artistic legacy they had helped create.
