Moths became serious subjects for naturalist illustrators well before photography existed to document them. From the 18th century onward, engravers and chromolithographers produced detailed plates for scientific publications and natural history volumes, where accuracy and beauty were equally expected. The results hold up as finished works of art in their own right. What's shown here are period originals from that tradition of natural history illustration.
