Music

Music has always needed an audience, and for most of the 20th century that meant print. Concert promoters, record labels, and venue owners commissioned artists to do in a single image what a song does in three minutes: create a mood and make it feel urgent. The work ranged from restrained jazz club handbills to the full psychedelic assault of late-1960s rock promotion. The pieces shown here are period originals from that tradition.
