Swimwear became a subject for commercial illustration long before it became ordinary, and the tension between glamour and propriety gave the genre much of its energy. George Petty, who spent years illustrating for Esquire and Jantzen, helped define the idealized figure that mid-century advertising returned to again and again. The tradition runs from early 20th-century magazine covers through postwar pin-up calendars and film promotion art. What's shown here are period originals from across that span.
