The Lawson Wood Collection

Lawson Wood was an English illustrator whose career stretched from Edwardian children's books through the golden age of American magazine covers. He is best known for his anthropomorphic animals, particularly a recurring chimpanzee named Gran'pop, rendered with a warmth and comic timing that made his work immediately recognizable on newsstands. Collier's Weekly was among his most prominent American clients, and the period originals shown here reflect that relationship.
