This colorful Japanese hikifuda, or advertising handbill, was produced for Kumazawa Shoten, a textile merchant in Ichinomiya, Aichi Prefecture, one of Japan’s historic centers of textile and weaving production. The design borrows from the traditional bijin-ga tradition of portraying beautiful women, showing an elegantly dressed woman in a purple kimono with a formal shimada hairstyle and floral kanzashi ornaments. During the Meiji period, familiar imagery from ukiyo-e was increasingly adapted for the rapidly developing world of commercial advertising.
The textiles surrounding her provide a fascinating glimpse into the period. Most striking is the repeating pattern of artillery cannons and Rising Sun flags, imagery associated with the wave of military and patriotic motifs that entered Japanese popular culture around the Sino-Japanese and Russo-Japanese wars. The juxtaposition is particularly compelling: an idealized image of traditional Japanese beauty appears alongside fabrics celebrating the increasingly modern and militarized nation. Produced through multicolor printing, the elaborate patterns and brilliant palette also demonstrate how traditional Japanese printmaking aesthetics could be put to distinctly modern commercial use.
Hikifuda were inexpensive advertisements distributed by merchants to promote their businesses and goods, making them an important precursor to modern Japanese advertising. Because they were everyday commercial ephemera rather than artworks intended for preservation, many were ultimately discarded. This surviving example brings together fashion, commerce, traditional beauty culture, textile history, and the changing identity of modern Japan, while its connection to Ichinomiya places it within a region whose textile industry has remained important for generations.
