This commanding 1881 chromolithograph depicts the Bald Eagle as Plate I in Jacob H. Studer’s Popular Ornithology: The Birds of North America, illustrated by Theodore Jasper. Its position at the very opening of the series was fitting: the Bald Eagle had served as the emblem of the United States on the Great Seal since 1782, making it a powerful introduction to a publication devoted to the birds of North America. Jasper presents the eagle not as an isolated specimen, but as part of a dramatic nesting scene, with an adult guarding three gray eaglets, an egg, and a freshly caught fish.
The details were both visually engaging and educational for nineteenth century readers. The downy young birds show the eagle before it develops the familiar white head and tail of adulthood, a transformation that takes several years. The fish at the nest identifies the eagle’s dependence on waterways and aquatic prey, while the distant coastal setting places the bird within its natural environment. Studer’s publication was created as a popular reference, bringing richly illustrated accounts of North American bird life into homes during an era of growing public interest in natural history.
Produced through chromolithography, a process in which separate prepared stones were used to build the image in color, this plate achieves remarkable depth in the eagle’s plumage, the nest, and the surrounding landscape. Jasper’s composition balances scientific observation with patriotic grandeur, presenting the Bald Eagle as both a living species and an enduring American symbol. As the first plate in Studer’s celebrated ornithological work, it remains a distinguished example of Victorian natural history illustration and nineteenth century Americana.
