This magnificent chromolithograph depicts the Wild Turkey as the commanding centerpiece of Plate CXV from Jacob H. Studer’s The Birds of North America, published in 1895 and illustrated by Theodore Jasper. Two adult turkeys dominate the woodland scene, surrounded by smaller numbered species that readers could identify through the book’s accompanying text. Created during the golden age of American natural history publishing, Studer’s work brought the study of native birds into the homes of a broad nineteenth century audience through richly colored, visually engaging plates.
The Wild Turkey held a particularly meaningful place in American natural history. Native to North America, the bird was famously admired by Benjamin Franklin, who wrote in 1784 that it was “a much more respectable Bird” than the Bald Eagle and praised its courage and American origins. By the late nineteenth century, however, Wild Turkey populations had sharply declined across much of their historic range due to hunting and the clearing of forests, giving images such as this an added historical resonance.
Produced through chromolithography, a process that built the composition through multiple color impressions, the plate captures the turkeys’ layered bronze plumage, distinctive heads, and powerful presence with remarkable depth. Jasper, a physician as well as an ornithological illustrator, combined close observation with dramatic composition, turning an educational book plate into a striking portrait of American wildlife. Both scientifically informative and beautifully decorative, this work preserves the Victorian fascination with nature at a moment when many native species were becoming increasingly precious.

Quite simply, if you are not satisfied with your purchase for any reason, simply contact us within 14 days of receipt and we'll gladly accept your return, providing the item is in the same condition as it was sent.
Returns
Our policy lasts 14 days. If 14 days have gone by since your purchase, unfortunately, we can’t offer you a refund or exchange.
To be eligible for a return, your item must be in the same condition that you received it. It must also be sent in the original packaging.
There are certain situations where only partial refunds are granted (if applicable). Any item not in its original condition, is damaged or missing parts for reasons not due to our error. Any item that is returned more than 14 days after delivery may also be ineligible.
Once your return is received and inspected, we will send you an email to notify you that we have received your returned item. Your refund will be processed, and a credit will automatically be applied to your credit card or original method of payment, within two business days. Original shipping costs are not refundable.
