This Meiji-period Japanese woodblock print presents Mount Tateyama, one of Japan’s Three Holy Mountains alongside Mount Fuji and Mount Hakusan, as both a physical landscape and a sacred Buddhist realm. For centuries, pilgrims traveled through Tateyama’s mountains as part of a spiritual journey associated with death, judgment, and eventual rebirth in paradise.
The composition moves from forested lowlands through dramatic volcanic terrain to the snow-covered peaks above. The vivid vermilion areas represent Tateyama’s volcanic landscape, whose sulfurous vents, boiling springs, and barren terrain were interpreted within local religious tradition as manifestations of Buddhist hell. At the summit, golden figures of Amida Buddha represent the contrasting Pure Land, where enlightened souls could be welcomed into paradise. The ascent therefore became a symbolic journey from hell toward salvation.
The print also functioned as a practical guide for pilgrims. Japanese inscriptions identify routes, lodging stations, hot springs, landmarks, and distances measured in ri, while directional markers orient travelers within the mountainous landscape. Its bird’s-eye perspective compresses an enormous geographic area into a single image, allowing viewers to understand both the physical pilgrimage route and its spiritual meaning.
Tateyama developed a particularly rich culture of mountain worship, combining Buddhism with older Japanese beliefs surrounding sacred mountains. The region also developed traditions that allowed women to participate in Tateyama pilgrimage culture at a time when many sacred mountains in Japan restricted female access.
Produced during the Meiji period, when Japan was rapidly modernizing, the print preserves a much older understanding of landscape in which geography and religion were inseparable. With its brilliant blues, greens, reds, and golds, it serves simultaneously as a pilgrimage map, devotional image, and remarkable record of Japan’s sacred mountain traditions.
