The 1830s saw the rise of mass circulation magazines in America. Promoting greater consumption, these publications became popular as means to share everything from literature, philosophy, to sports and the current state of international affairs. Not to mention, they were a newfound opportunity for advertisers to capitalize on a novelty medium-- resulting in a new and attractive stream of revenue that would only encourage many others to soon develop publications of their own.

In the early 20th century, there was no greater magazine for boys than "The American Boy." First published in November of 1899 by The Sprague Publishing Co., this monthly publication featured stories about action-packed adventures and short stories that would appeal to their male-dominated audience. With over 300,000 issues in circulation at their peak, its no wonder American Boy won an award for the most popular magazine among young men for the time! Fantastic graphics by American illustrator W.W. Clarke.
