This original stone lithograph by Jules Chéret, known as “the father of the modern poster,” is a vibrant example of Belle Époque advertising art. Published as a supplement to Le Courrier Français on January 26, 1896, and printed by Imprimerie Chaix’s dedicated Ateliers Chéret, the poster was created for Saxoléine, a petroleum lamp oil brand marketed for its purity and safety.
The composition features Chéret’s iconic “Chérette,” the joyful, red-haired female figure who became his artistic signature across hundreds of posters. Her luminous yellow dress, energetic pose, and gesture toward the glowing lamp connect feminine elegance with modern domestic comfort. Chéret’s use of vivid yellow, red, and blue demonstrates his mastery of color lithography and helped transform advertising into a collectible art form.
Saxoléine’s printed claims, “extra-blanc,” “déodorisé,” and “ininflammable,” emphasized that the oil was extra white, deodorized, and safe for household lamp use. Sold in sealed five-liter cans, it appealed to a growing consumer market seeking cleaner and more reliable lighting. Created during the height of the Paris poster craze, when collectors avidly sought fresh designs from the streets, this work reflects both Chéret’s commercial brilliance and the democratization of art through modern advertising.
