Le Moustique- French Satirical Comic

"Le Rire" or "Laughter" was the name of a successful satirical French publication that ran from October 1894 to April 1971. Founded during the Belle Epoque by French creative director Felix Juven, "Le Rire" found success in a time where people in French society were enjoying higher educations, better income, and most importantly- leisure time. As interest in the arts, culture and politics intensified during the turn of the century, "Le Rire" was the perfect concoction to satisfy such curiosities for the historical price of just 15 cents! Wow.

What a hilarious illustration this is! In this whimsical graphic we see a sun-stricken man defeated by his close encounters with nefarious blood-sucking mosquitos. He snoozes off into oblivion as he shouts..."Mosquitos, get out of my enclosure! Ugh, I'm defeated". What a harrowing battle that must've been. Designed for the cover of the 7th edition of Le Rire by French artist Doés, published on August 31, 1901. Signed in plate on the bottom right hand corner. Printed by Bertin & Cie Paris.
