This charming 1930 Japanese chiyogami (decorative paper) features a lively repeating pattern of karako, the playful children that have appeared in Japanese decorative arts for centuries. Scattered across a soft sage green ground, the rosy-cheeked figures beat drums, wave fans, carry fruit, and play, dressed in bright red and black. Karako, literally "Chinese children," became popular auspicious figures in Japan, associated with happiness, prosperity, and the wish for a flourishing family.
Chiyogami is a traditional form of patterned Japanese paper with roots extending back to the Edo period. Produced in countless decorative designs, these papers were used to wrap gifts, cover boxes and small objects, and for a variety of traditional crafts. Rather than being created solely as works of art, they brought sophisticated pattern and design into everyday life.
Printed in 1930 using traditional woodblock techniques, this example uses a restrained palette of vermillion red, black, cream, and sage green. Slight variations in the application of ink give the repeated figures the distinctive character of hand-printed work.
The period also coincided with a renewed appreciation for traditional Japanese craftsmanship and the rise of the mingei, or folk craft, movement. Chiyogami reflects many of the qualities celebrated by mingei: functional objects made beautiful through skilled craftsmanship, traditional materials, and regional design.
A wonderful example of early 20th-century Japanese decorative printing, this chiyogami captures both the playful charm of karako imagery and a centuries-old tradition of transforming everyday paper into something remarkably beautiful.
