This 1930s Japanese chiyogami (decorative paper) features the traditional harukoma, or "spring horse," a playful folk motif closely associated with New Year celebrations, good fortune, and childhood in Japan. Hobby horses with striped red and white bodies, blue accents, and golden poles dance across a lavender-and-white checkered ground, surrounded by scattered blossoms and stylized floral forms.
The harukoma has a much longer history than its appearance as a children's toy might suggest. Its imagery developed from traditional New Year customs and performances connected with welcoming good fortune at the beginning of the year. Over time, the horse-on-a-stick became a familiar children's plaything and an auspicious seasonal motif. Horses themselves carried longstanding symbolic importance in Japan, particularly in connection with Shinto practice, making the cheerful harukoma an image that could suggest both play and good luck for the coming year.
Chiyogami has roots in the decorative paper traditions of the Edo period, when woodblock printers adapted their skills to create richly patterned sheets for everyday use. These papers could be used for wrapping, covering boxes and small objects, doll making, and other decorative crafts. Their repeating designs often drew from the same world of seasonal flowers, festivals, toys, animals, and auspicious symbols found throughout Japanese popular art.
Produced using traditional woodblock printing techniques, this sheet reflects the craftsmanship of Japanese decorative paper production. The vivid red, blue, and gold of the horses stand out against the geometric background, while the blossoms reinforce the harukoma's association with the New Year and the anticipated arrival of spring.

All items are carefully hand-packed and shipped in a sturdy tube within 3 business days of payment unless otherwise indicated. Some items which were previously folded or not suitable for rolling will be sent in a flat pack. Please note that an adult signature may be required upon delivery, so we are unable to ship to PO boxes.

Quite simply, if you are not satisfied with your purchase for any reason, simply contact us within 14 days of receipt and we'll gladly accept your return, providing the item is in the same condition as it was sent.
Returns
Our policy lasts 14 days. If 14 days have gone by since your purchase, unfortunately, we can’t offer you a refund or exchange.
To be eligible for a return, your item must be in the same condition that you received it. It must also be sent in the original packaging.
There are certain situations where only partial refunds are granted (if applicable). Any item not in its original condition, is damaged or missing parts for reasons not due to our error. Any item that is returned more than 14 days after delivery may also be ineligible.
Once your return is received and inspected, we will send you an email to notify you that we have received your returned item. Your refund will be processed, and a credit will automatically be applied to your credit card or original method of payment, within two business days. Original shipping costs are not refundable.
