This dramatic Meiji-era Japanese woodblock print depicts the legendary swordsman Horibe Yasubei at the duel of Takada no Baba, one of the most celebrated episodes in samurai popular culture. Yasubei strides through a shadowed grove of pines with katana drawn, his billowing black robes and brilliant red scabbard creating a striking contrast against the atmospheric blue-gray landscape.
The historical Yasubei became famous for his involvement in the Takada no Baba vendetta of 1694, when he reportedly rushed to assist a fellow warrior in a deadly confrontation. His reputation as a swordsman was established by the episode, but his fame only grew when he later became one of the Forty-Seven Rōnin, the group of Akō retainers who avenged their lord in 1702. Their story became the inspiration for Kanadehon Chūshingura, one of the most enduring narratives of loyalty, sacrifice, and revenge in Japanese theater and art.
A circular inset above the main scene depicts two elegantly dressed women against a vivid orange ground. This type of secondary image allowed printmakers to introduce additional characters or narrative associations while creating a colorful visual counterpoint to the principal action below.
Produced during the Meiji era, the print reflects the continued popularity of samurai subjects decades after the abolition of the warrior class. Kabuki performances, popular literature, and woodblock prints kept figures such as Horibe Yasubei alive in the public imagination, transforming historical warriors into legendary cultural heroes.
The atmospheric pine grove and subtle gradations of the background contrast beautifully with the strong black and red of Yasubei's costume, demonstrating the sophisticated color printing still being achieved in late 19th-century ukiyo-e.
A compelling example of Meiji-era samurai imagery, this print preserves the legend of a warrior whose exploits became intertwined with Japan's most famous story of samurai loyalty and revenge.

Our Guarantee
All of our posters are guaranteed to be authentic and as described in the product description to the best of our knowledge and belief, and in good faith. Quite simply, if you are not satisfied with your purchase for any reason, simply contact us within 14 days of receipt and we'll gladly accept your return, providing the item is in the same condition as it was sent.
Returns
Our policy lasts 14 days. If 14 days have gone by since your purchase, unfortunately, we can’t offer you a refund or exchange.
To be eligible for a return, your item must be in the same condition that you received it. It must also be sent in the original packaging.
There are certain situations where only partial refunds are granted (if applicable). Any item not in its original condition, is damaged or missing parts for reasons not due to our error. Any item that is returned more than 14 days after delivery may also be ineligible.
Once your return is received and inspected, we will send you an email to notify you that we have received your returned item. Your refund will be processed, and a credit will automatically be applied to your credit card or original method of payment, within two business days. Original shipping costs are not refundable.
