Animals have been a subject for commercial and fine-art printmakers for centuries, long before photography made illustration optional. Natural history publishing drove much of the early work, with engravers producing detailed plates of birds, fish, and mammals for scientific journals and collectors. By the 20th century, the same subjects moved into advertising, travel, and conservation campaigns. The pieces shown here are period originals from across that tradition.
