Cuba developed one of the most distinctive poster traditions in the Western Hemisphere after 1959, when the revolutionary government established cultural institutions that treated graphic design as a public art form. The Instituto Cubano del Arte e Industria Cinematográficos, better known as ICAIC, became especially influential, commissioning bold silkscreen film posters that circulated widely and are now studied alongside the best European work of the same era. The pieces shown here are period originals from that tradition.
