Egypt became a recurring subject for European and American printmakers long before modern tourism existed, driven first by Napoleon's 1798 expedition and the flood of illustrated scientific volumes it produced, then by the opening of the Suez Canal and a steady wave of travel and trade that followed. The imagery that emerged, from archaeological illustration to commercial travel campaigns, drew on a fascination with antiquity that never quite faded.
