Orientalism

Orientalism in commercial art spans roughly a century of Western designers, illustrators, and printmakers projecting fantasy onto Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa. The results were often more about atmosphere than accuracy, but the craft was serious: lithographers and illustrators competed to conjure mystery through color, costume, and architectural detail. Frank McIntosh, who defined the visual identity of Asia Magazine through the 1920s and 1930s, is among the most accomplished figures in this tradition.
