Propaganda

Governments and movements have used printed imagery to shape public opinion for as long as mass printing has existed, but the 20th century turned it into a discipline. Two world wars, the Cold War, and dozens of national revolutions each produced a distinct visual vocabulary, from Soviet constructivism to American home-front campaigns, where bold color and direct address were tools of persuasion as much as aesthetics.
