Spirits advertising produced some of the most inventive commercial art of the early 20th century, partly because the category rewarded personality over information. Aperitifs, bitters, and liqueurs competed on image alone, which drew serious designers to the work. A.M. Cassandre, one of the most celebrated poster artists of the Art Deco period, took on drinks commissions with the same ambition he brought to ocean liners and railways. The period originals in this collection span that tradition from the Belle Époque through mid-century.
