State maps became a publishing staple in the late 19th century, when American atlas publishers raced to document a country still absorbing new territories and redrawing its own boundaries. The best commercial atlases of that era treated cartography as a craft, with clean engraving, careful hand-coloring, and typography that held up as design long after the geography became history. What survives from that period are period originals made to inform, and worth collecting as objects.
