Jules Chéret was a French lithographer who, working in Paris in the second half of the 19th century, essentially invented the modern poster. Before him, commercial printing was flat and typographic. He brought in swirling figures, vivid color, and a sense of movement that made the street itself into a gallery. His work defined the visual mood of the Belle Époque, and the period originals shown here come from that first generation of the form.
