This powerful etching reproduces Joseph Stallaert's dramatic painting depicting the legendary martyrdom of the monk Telemachus in 404 AD. According to tradition, the Eastern monk was so horrified by gladiatorial combat in the Roman Colosseum that he rushed into the arena to separate the combatants, a bold act that cost him his life but ultimately led Emperor Honorius to abolish these brutal spectacles forever.
Etched by S.J. Ferris in 1884, this print captures all the emotional intensity of Stallaert's original work. The composition places the aged monk at center, his white robes a stark contrast to the muscular gladiator's near-nakedness, as he physically intervenes to prevent another death. The fallen gladiator beneath them, entangled in his net, awaits a fate now suspended. The Colosseum crowd looms in the background, their bloodlust about to turn to shock.
Stallaert, a professor at the Royal Academy of Brussels and recipient of the Order of Léopold, was renowned for his historically accurate and morally instructive paintings. Published by Gebbie & Co. with an accompanying text page, this print brought European academic art to American audiences. A compelling piece for collectors of Victorian religious art, Roman history, or 19th century academic painting.

Quite simply, if you are not satisfied with your purchase for any reason, simply contact us within 14 days of receipt and we'll gladly accept your return, providing the item is in the same condition as it was sent.
Returns
Our policy lasts 14 days. If 14 days have gone by since your purchase, unfortunately, we can’t offer you a refund or exchange.
To be eligible for a return, your item must be in the same condition that you received it. It must also be sent in the original packaging.
There are certain situations where only partial refunds are granted (if applicable). Any item not in its original condition, is damaged or missing parts for reasons not due to our error. Any item that is returned more than 14 days after delivery may also be ineligible.
Once your return is received and inspected, we will send you an email to notify you that we have received your returned item. Your refund will be processed, and a credit will automatically be applied to your credit card or original method of payment, within two business days. Original shipping costs are not refundable.
