This 2004 silkscreen print by Emek Golan exemplifies the sophisticated visual synthesis that characterized the early 2000s concert poster renaissance. The work demonstrates a studied engagement with Edo period ukiyo-e conventions, particularly the bijin-ga (beautiful woman) genre, while subverting traditional iconography through the substitution of musical instruments for hair ornaments and electronic speakers for the customary tea service.
Emek's technical execution reveals his background in both fine art and commercial illustration. The gradient background transitions from warm coral through neutral tones to cool blue-gray, creating atmospheric depth that references the bokashi technique of traditional woodblock printing. The artist's characteristic precision in linework, particularly evident in the flowing patterns of the kimono and the detailed rendering of the instruments, demonstrates his commitment to craft within the silkscreen medium.
The poster occupies a significant position within both Dave Matthews Band's extensive tour art archive and Emek's celebrated body of work. It represents the convergence of the jam band touring culture's emphasis on collectible ephemera with the broader art world's growing recognition of concert poster art as a legitimate contemporary art form.
