Au Pays Du Scalp- French Satirical Comic

"Le Rire" or "Laughter" was the name of a successful satirical French publication that ran from October 1894 to April 1971. Founded during the Belle Epoque by French creative director Felix Juven, "Le Rire" found success in a time where people in French society were enjoying higher educations, better income, and most importantly- leisure time. Interested in arts, culture and politics intensified during the turn of the century, "Le Rire" was the perfect concoction to satisfy such curiosities for the historical price of just 15 cents! Wow.

In this fantastically illustrated cover from October 19th 1901, we see what appear to be two indigenous caricatures discussing their morning coffee...of all things!

"How dare you go outside without getting your head straight with some coffee...c'mon it will be a 2 minute affair!" says the larger indigenous male. "Ah yes, you came at the perfect time!" says the smaller indigenous male. Now we can definitely agree with that! Beautiful color choices and detailing on this stunning cover designed by H. Avelot for La Rire's 7th issue. Signed in plate in the lower left hand corner.

Condition: Very good. Minor spotting and page toning in accordance with documents age. Light border wear with three small tears along left border. Faint ink transfer along lower quadrant. Conservation mounted on linen. Please use zoom feature to get a better understanding of overall condition.
