Description

Rick Griffin’s Motherload stands as one of the most iconic images of the Avalon Ballroom era. This original first printing, FD-60-OP-1, announced Big Brother and the Holding Company with Janis Joplin, joined by the Sir Douglas Quintet and The Orkustra, May 5–7, 1967. Lights were staged by the North American Ibis Alchemical Co.

Griffin’s design frames a stark photograph of Big Brother and the Holding Company within a bold, arched structure, surrounded by undulating typography that all but vibrates off the sheet. The word “Motherload” stretches across the top in thick, interlaced lettering, its weight balanced by Griffin’s intricate border work and electric color palette of red, blue, and brown. The effect is both monumental and deeply psychedelic, perfectly suited to Janis Joplin’s powerhouse presence at the center of the San Francisco sound.

As part of the Family Dog series, FD-60 reflects Griffin’s singular contribution to the poster art of the 1960s. His ability to merge photography, ornate lettering, and symbolic design turned the Avalon Ballroom into more than a venue, it became a canvas for the counterculture’s most inventive visual voices.
