1930s

The 1930s were a high point for commercial printing on both sides of the Atlantic. Art Deco, which had arrived in the previous decade, matured into something more restrained and geometric, while a parallel strain of bold, flat illustration took hold in travel and tourism work. The Depression also pushed designers toward a kind of optimistic grandeur, making posters and print work feel more ambitious, not less. The pieces shown here are period originals from that decade.
