This charming Meiji-era hikifuda (advertising flyer) was produced for Nakane Isuke, an Osaka manufacturer of fish boxes and wooden packaging. It comes from a fascinating period in Japanese commercial art, when centuries-old woodblock printing traditions were increasingly being adapted to the needs of modern advertising.
At the center, the lucky god Ebisu grins from within a fan-shaped vignette, holding his familiar fishing rod and prized sea bream. As the traditional patron of fishermen, merchants, and prosperity, Ebisu was a natural figure for an Osaka business connected to the fish trade. An abacus reinforces the message of successful commerce and profitable business.
Osaka had long been Japan's great mercantile center, famously known as "the nation's kitchen" for its role in the country's food and wholesale trade. During the Meiji era, its merchants embraced new forms of advertising while continuing to rely on familiar symbols of luck, abundance, and good fortune. Hikifuda became an especially colorful expression of this transition, combining eye-catching imagery with practical information about a merchant and the goods they offered.
Here, bold black panels of white calligraphy frame the colorful central scene, while a decorative banner advertises the company's products. The combination of traditional imagery and straightforward commercial messaging captures a moment when Japan was rapidly modernizing without abandoning the visual language of its merchant culture.
A wonderful example of Meiji-era commercial folk art, this hikifuda offers a glimpse into the lively advertising culture of Osaka and the everyday businesses that supported its thriving markets.
