Art galleries have been commissioning printed promotion since the late 19th century, when exhibition posters became a way to bring the visual language of the work itself into the street. The tradition produced some of the most ambitious graphic design of the 20th century, as museums and commercial galleries alike hired serious designers to announce shows.
