Cover art occupies a strange position in commercial illustration: it had to work as advertising before the reader knew what was inside. From the golden age of magazine publishing through mid-century paperback design, artists were asked to stop someone in their tracks with a single image. The best of that work holds up as art in its own right. The pieces shown here are period originals from that tradition.
