Expositions and world's fairs were among the most heavily promoted events of the 19th and early 20th centuries, and the graphic work they generated reflected that ambition. Cities competed to host them, and the posters and printed material produced for each one were meant to signal modernity and national prestige in a single image. Festivals and regional celebrations followed the same logic on a smaller scale. The pieces shown here are period originals from that tradition.
