Food and drink have been among the most commercially illustrated subjects since the late 19th century, when manufacturers first needed to convince consumers that a branded product was worth choosing over a generic one. The work that came out of that period, and the decades that followed, ranges from elegant French liqueur campaigns to American magazine spreads celebrating postwar abundance.
