Linen backing is a conservation process in which a poster or work on paper is mounted onto a thin layer of archival linen, stabilizing fragile or damaged pieces without altering the printed surface. It became the standard restoration method for vintage works over the course of the 20th century, and most serious collectors consider a clean linen backing a mark of proper care rather than a modification.
