For most of the 20th century, a film's visual identity lived entirely in its hand-illustrated artwork, created before most audiences had seen a single frame. Studios and their contracted artists had to sell atmosphere, genre, and star power through a single image, which pushed commercial illustration to some of its most inventive work.
