Primates

Primates have a long history as subjects in commercial illustration, partly because their expressions and postures invite the kind of comic anthropomorphism that sells magazines, and partly because they genuinely fascinate. Lawson Wood built much of his career on this territory in the 1930s and 1940s, turning chimpanzees and monkeys into recurring characters with real personality. The period originals shown here come from that tradition of illustrated humor and natural curiosity.
