Reptiles occupied a strange place in natural history illustration: genuinely difficult to observe, often misunderstood, and visually dramatic enough to reward careful rendering. The great 18th and 19th century natural history publishers devoted serious effort to lizards, snakes, turtles, and crocodilians, producing plates where scientific accuracy and artistic ambition reinforced each other.
