Franciszek Starowieyski was one of the most distinctive voices to emerge from the Polish poster tradition, a school that produced some of the most inventive graphic work of the 20th century. Trained in Kraków and Warsaw in the early 1950s, he developed a style rooted in dense, often unsettling figuration that had little in common with the socialist realism expected of artists in postwar Poland. His theater and film work in particular carries a dark, surrealist energy that is immediately recognizable. The pieces here are period originals from that tradition.
