World War 1

World War 1 produced some of the most direct graphic communication in history. Governments on every side needed to recruit soldiers, sell war bonds, and maintain civilian morale, and they turned to commercial illustrators to do it. The result was a decade of poster work that treated persuasion as an art form, with imagery ranging from stark patriotic appeals to surprisingly sophisticated design.
