Holidays gave commercial artists a reliable annual brief, and over the decades that repetition produced some of the most technically ambitious work of the 20th century. Christmas, Easter, and the Fourth of July each developed their own visual conventions, refined year after year by illustrators working for advertisers, travel companies, and magazine publishers.
