This concert poster, designed by Gary Grimshaw (1946-2014) for MC5 performances at The See venue in Detroit, represents a significant document of the city's psychedelic rock movement. The original design dates to June 1967; this example is an authorized posthumous reissue produced by the Gary Grimshaw Legacy Foundation in 2018, numbered 44 from an edition of 100.
Grimshaw's composition demonstrates the characteristic synthesis of Art Nouveau aesthetics with psychedelic visual language that defined the era's concert poster art. The central female figure, rendered in cream tones against a powder blue ground, emerges from undulating crimson forms that evoke both Alphonse Mucha's decorative panels and the consciousness-expanding imagery of the San Francisco poster artists. The hand-lettered typography flows organically around the composition, integrating text and image in the manner pioneered by Wes Wilson and Rick Griffin.
Catalogued as AOR-3.131 in the authoritative Art of Rock compendium, this poster documents the MC5's early career before their association with manager John Sinclair and the White Panther Party elevated them to icons of radical rock. The venue, The See at 3929 Woodward Avenue, was among several clubs nurturing Detroit's underground music scene in the months preceding the July 1967 civil unrest.
